TOOTHED CONDOMS take a bite out of crime
The Rapex: introduced in 2005 by Sonne Ehlers, 57. Anti-rape female device inserted into the vaginal canal. The invert condom is lined with TWENTY-FIVE microscopic barbs that bind to the rapist’s penis- they have to be surgically removed. The inventor was inspired by an interview with a rape victim who once said ‘If only I had teeth down there’. Launched in 2005 in South Africa. Goals: reach global distribution.
Pros:
- available in all sizes
- costs just a little more than a regular condom
Pros:
- available in all sizes
- costs just a little more than a regular condom
- identifies rapist (!)
- the rapist cannot see that it is worn
- reduces the chances of a woman falling pregnant or contracting sexually transmitted diseases
- when the female wants to have sex, can be removed the same way it was applied: like a tampon
Cons:
- the rapist might still kill the victim, however, the pain down there should refrain to think of anything else
- can be used outside of real purpose; as a vengeance, say… against an ex-bf (no, this does not belong under pros)
Critics say the device is medieval, vengeful and barbaric-
I believe rapists should be identified, if not punished. "[It's] a medieval device for a medieval deed." And don’t give me the evolutionist argument that men are biologically engineered to spread the seed. I call it Your Right Hand, and use it.

Men are biologically engineered to spread the seed.
and I love them for that-
as long as everything is consensual
Pffft. What is this, Medieval Times? The left hand is perfectly acceptable too, you know.
Hey Julie, nice blog. But a little reminder that virtually the entire world civilization as we know it has been built by war and conquest, ie; non-consensual sex, slavery of women etc...
to barsta-
Imagine there's no countries
It isnt hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
No religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
Imagine no possesions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
You may say I'm a dreamer
but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will live as one
it's indeed because it's always been that way that people like Ehlers decide to act on it-
you should think about it too!
I second that:)
(Applauds)
WTF! You write about a castration torture device and talk about world peace. Gimme a break!
it's not castration... it's reversible! the barbs are removed surgically. it's a way to identify criminials, and the pain is necessary so that the rapists bring themselves to authorities.
yes i think the world would be a more peaceful place if we could identify rapists and then do something with them (castration or not!)
What if...I really do forget to take it off! With my ex!!!! AWW I'M SOOO SOORRRY HONEY!!!!!!LOL!!!
Jeez, you chicks are kinda..scary.
This is the most horrible idea I have ever seen, and believe me I've seen some bad ones. First of all, most definitely, the girl's life would be at serious risk, once the rapist realizes its 'hurting down there'. Contrary to your supposition that the pain would act as a deterrent, in fact case after case has demonstrated that adrenaline would inhibit the agressor's sensitivity to pain. This is the main reason why kicking a rapist in the groin only works in the movies. In real life, unless the victim has practiced kicking guys in the balls and is a pro at it (highly unlikely) she WILL be attacked and seriously injured, if not worse. This so called device is not only a joke, it's a DANGEROUS joke.

I'm sorry did not mean to post twice, just would like to emphasize however, ladies DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT USING THIS contraption against an attacker, drunk or not. Also would like to point out many attempted rape charges have been stayed because of the alcohol issue. ie. The Attacker claims he was not in control. Imagine the nightmare scenario where if his pecker has to be surgically repaired the rapist now sues you for damages!
oh well do you have any constructive alternative to suggest?
apart from mmm let's say, finding a way to inhibit adrenaline, which will, by the way, also be secreted in the victim's body to help her fight back?
Learning to fight is like learning anything well, cannot be done in a weekend. Here are several realistic suggestions;
1. get a gun permit, LEARN to shoot
2. take fight classes, but keep at it, at least 2 YEARS, with the best teacher you can afford.
3. carry MACE if legal where you live, and again, LEARN and PRACTICE using it.
Your point about adrenaline helping the victim fight back is true only if she is trained for response, otherwise the adrenaline will most likely induce temporary paralysis. It's your basis 'fight' vs 'flight' physiological response. 99.9% girls can't 'fight' or 'flee' so they in fact 'freeze'. Fact of life.
Zimm, you frighten me dude. I've decided to buy a gun, take boxing lessons, AND carry a mace(whatever that may be)!!
thank you for the advice, zimm!
have you ever heard of Fortress mentality?
Yes in fact. My response is simply google "Imette St. Guillen" and ask yourself what if...??
:(
great demonstration of Fortress mentality
Sure, just ask Imette.
you scare me
Hey Julie, not that I'm taking sides here, but...
FACT: Every two minutes, somewhere in America, someone is sexually assaulted. (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) Calculation based on 2000 National Crime Victimization Survey. Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice)
FACT: The National College Women Sexual Victimization Study estimated that between 1 in 4 and 1 in 5 college women experience completed or attempted rape during their college years (Fisher 2000).
FACT:One out of every six American women have been the victims of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. (Prevalence, Incidence and Consequences of Violence Against Women Survey, National Institute of Justice and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1998)
FACT:Rape victims often experience anxiety, guilt, nervousness, phobias, substance abuse, sleep disturbances, depression, alienation, sexual dysfunction, and aggression. They often distrust others and replay the assault in their minds, and they are at increased risk of future victimization (DeLahunta 1997).
I'm not diminishing the problem of rape, and I'm sorry if that's what you understood from my comments. Thank you for all the info. i realize this is a touchy subject, to say the least. That's what my post was for!!
Awareness is crucial, but there's a difference between awareness and overdoing it. I agree there is no overdoing self-defense,of course I'm not going to rely on adrenaline to save my life, but there's a way of doing it- and I don't think a permanent state of anxiety helps in any way.
xo
Perhaps we should start from the acknowledgement that women are not necessarily safe. The myth of safety perpetuates the invisibilization and denial of domestic violence and sexual assault that occur daily, if not hourly. We have to take a careful forensic analysis of ways in which men have power over women, women of color, working class women, etc. Instead of using the myth of safety to justify the exclusion of tangible progression, we should be using the debate as an opportunity to examine myths we hold about our communities and ways they privilege a certain way of thinking that may be.. just simply erroneous.
Something to think about. Now can we all please move on?
Second that:)
